Course Description: This is a creative writing course on Ekphrastic poetry: poetry that describes or is inspired by a specific work of art. During each class, we will read examples of ekphrastic poetry throughout history while viewing the works of art that inspired them. Students will spend time searching throughout multiple periods of art history for works that they would like to write about. We will spend class time writing ekphrastic poems with guidance and individual feedback from the instructor. At the end of the course, students will have produced a small collection of their own ekphrastic poetry.

Course Learning Objectives & Outcomes:

Students will...

...gain an understanding of the poetic form of ekphrasis, the writing of poetry about visual art.

...become familiar with basic mechanics of poetry, such as free verse, blank verse, ode, elegy, and haiku.

...learn elements of poetry such as rhyme, meter, stanza, and verse;

...learn to employ poetic devices such as alliteration, personification, hyperbole, repetition, anaphora, simile, and metaphor.
