Few media can match the expressiveness and immediacy of pen and ink. Drawing inspiration from the great masters of the Renaissance, the minimalist landscape artists of Japan, and the classic book illustrators of the 19th and early 20th centuries, we will study and practice the ways pen and ink can be used to create an endless variety of textures and effects. Students will learn to use cross hatching, stippling, scumbling, contour lines and other techniques to render three-dimensional forms and create value. Using pens, brushes, India ink and ink wash, each student will work through exercises and projects designed to help guide them towards discovering their own unique style.
