EXPLORING CALLIGRAPHY: The Art of Making Beautiful Letterforms

This Spring, these twelve classes are open to everyone wanting to learn calligraphy or improve their skills! We will study two different hands: italic and copperplate, focusing on consistent size, shape, slant and spacing of the letterforms and layout design as you create your own artwork. The course will focus on individually guided practice and will include instructor demonstrations and viewing of many samples of calligraphic art.

This calligraphy class will focus on:

  • how to make each letter (all the minuscules and majuscules) of the two hands: italic and copperplate
  • learn about inks, calligraphic materials and pens
  • peruse wonderful calligraphy books
  • create your own beautiful works of art

Each student will be charged a $50 fee for the calligraphy supply kit which will include: one 2 oz jar of Moon Palace Sumi Ink, an oblique pen holder and nibs, a box of ink cartridges,, a Pilot Parallel pen and an 11x17” practice pad.

Calligraphy is the art of beautiful handwriting. The word derives from the ancient Greek: kallos meaning "beauty" and graphẽ "writing". It is the art of giving form to letters in an expressive, harmonious and skillful manner.
