Sketchbook/Drawing from Observation/Multimedia Paintings Goal:
The sketchbook project will provide art students with teacher-guided assignments, self-directed investigations, and prompted creative projects as well as the basis for larger studio art works. It is a place to explore the various uses of materials and techniques. It will be a space to archive contour drawings, drawings from observation, thumbnail sketches, and small annotated paintings for planning larger works of art. The students’ artwork will incorporate visual concepts that reflect The Elements of Art (space, color, shape, form, value, texture, and line) and The Principles of Design (balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm and unity). Art Historical components, Cultural Movements and the study of individual Artists’ work will be addressed.
Our Sketchbooks will be a visual journal, an idea book to develop visual ideas, write stories or proposals, scribble ideas and visual concepts and create a space for reflective creative writing. The sketchbook contents will be used to create larger in-class studio works. The sketchbook itself does not have to be complete by the time of the end of the class series as the student will be accustomed to using a sketchbook as a creative tool.
The instruction period starts with a 10-minute project description and at concludes with a 10 minute critique/share and clean up. At times there will be a one project per class day as well as projects that can be time extended or to be continued as an at home project. Investigations for at home use are always encouraged. The sketchbook itself is considered as a work of art.
Supplies: All art supplies will be provided.
Parents, once you register for a Youth Class, we will email you a form to complete with additional information about your child. Please keep an eye out for this email 1-3 days after registering.
*Youth classes have been designed by age to be as pedagogically appropriate as possible, but the Academy recognizes that there are special situations where students are advanced for their age. Please inquire with the front office if you would like your child to be placed into a class that is not within their age range. Thank you.
