Introduction to Foundations in Art Sketchbook/ Drawings from Observation/ Multimedia Paintings The Elements of Art and The Principles of Design
Student Sketchbook Project / Goal The sketchbook project will provide art students with teacher-guided assignments, self-directed investigations and prompted creative projects. It is a place to explore the various uses of materials and techniques. It will be a space to practice contour drawings, drawings from observation, thumbnail sketches, small annotated paintings, and larger works of art. The students art work will incorporate visual concepts that reflect The Elements of Art (space, color, shape, form, value, texture and line) and The Principles of Design (balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm and unity). Art Historical components, Cultural Movements and the study of individual Artists work will be addressed.
In Practice Our Sketchbooks will be a visual journal. An idea book to be used to develop visual concepts and drawing skills. Scribbling ideas and doodling visual concepts can create a space for reflective creative writing as well. The sketchbook itself does not have to be complete by the time of the end of the class series as the student will be accustomed to using a sketchbook as a creative tool. The instruction period begins with a 10-minute project description and at the conclusion, a 10-minute critique/share and clean up. At times there will be one project per class as well as projects that can be time extended, or to be continued as an at-home project. Investigations for at-home use are always encouraged. The sketchbook is considered as a work of art in itself.
Supplies: All art supplies will be provided
Parents, once you register for a Youth Class, we will email you a form to complete with additional information about your child. Please keep an eye out for this email 1-3 days after registering.
*Youth classes have been designed by age to be as pedagogically appropriate as possible, but the Academy recognizes that there are special situations where students are advanced for their age. Please inquire with the front office if you would like your child to be placed into a class that is not within their age range. Thank you.
