Class Size: 5-8

Calligraphy is the art of beautiful handwriting. The word derives from the ancient Greek: kallos meaning "beauty" and graphẽ "writing". It is the art of giving form to letters in an expressive, harmonious and skillful manner.

This Fall, these twelve classes are open to everyone wanting to learn calligraphy or improve their skills! We will study the copperplate hand this semester, focusing on consistent size, shape, slant and spacing of the letterforms and layout design as you create your own artwork. The course will focus on individually guided practice and will include instructor demonstrations and viewing of many samples of calligraphic art.

In this calligraphy class you will learn:
• how to make each letter (all the minuscules and capitals) of the copperplate hand
• learn about inks, calligraphic materials and pens
• the art of flourishing
• how to create a wedding invitation
• how to address envelopes

Over the length of this course, I will have on hand plenty of calligraphic materials to share with you: different types of pens, a wide variety of tools of the trade, artwork (my work as well as others), and many books, so there will be plenty of inspiration for you in the twelve weeks to come!

Each student will be charged a $50 fee for the calligraphy supply kit which you will receive in the first class. It will include: an oblique pen holder with brass flange, a variety of nibs, two bottles of different inks and an 11x17” copperplate practice pad.

In addition to the kit, you are asked to please bring the following additional supplies:
• a good quality pencil and eraser
• a 12" or 15” steel ruler with a cork backing
• a red or blue ballpoint pen
• a small jar for cleaning/rinsing your pen. Not too deep. Recommended: a Faber-Castell collapsible container
• paper towels (Viva brand recommended)
• notebook and pen
