How to Paint a Portrait of a Tree is a class learning how to see, draw and paint an individual tree with all of its glory and its own individual characteristics.

We will study and draw on a sketch pad (11” x 14”) with pencil (2B), some various trunks and branches of a tree as well as values and shapes of foliage. I will introduce how atmosphere and its color that surrounds a tree is handled as well as how sunlight affects colors and values. We will sketch the tree with its full range of values in the afternoon.

We will use our pencil sketches to draw the tree onto a canvas (no smaller than size 11” x 14” and not larger than a 16” x 20”). We will paint our sketch, learning about local colors, color in the air, values, edges, sunlight and shadows and reflective light in a tree, to create a sound and lovely composition.
